Greenfield South 280 MW Sherway Power Plant (Mississauga/Etobicoke)

Greenfield South Power Corporation is in the process of constructing a 280 megawatt capacity natural gas power plant at 2315 Loreland Avenue in Mississauga Ontario. The MIRANET website provides a detailed chronology about the project.

Although the plant is in Mississauga, the residents of Alderwood would be directly affected by the emissions from the power plant, since our community is directly down wind from the Loreland location. The power plant will be located approximately 1.2 km from the northernmost boundary of Alderwood.

We believe that the Loreland location is not suitable for any kind of power plant for the following reasons:

Proximity to Residential Areas

  • The closest home, is less than 100 meters away from the boundaries of the power plant
  • The Coram Crescent community, is located about 200 meters from the power plant
  • The boundaries of the Sherway Neighbourhood (Mississauga), are about 500 meters away from the power plant
  • Havenwood Public School, and the PLASP Early Learning and Child Care Centre, are located about 1.2 km from the power plant, there are also various other schools located within a couple of kilometers
  • The Trillium Queensway Health Care Centre is located about 700 meters from the power plant
  • The Dorothey Ley Hospice, is located about 900 meters from the power plant
  • Sherway Gardens, and the Sherway Gardens Condo Towers are located about 1km from the gas power plant, there are two additional towers currently under construction.
  • The area is primary light industrial
Impact on Property Values

Power Plant Building

  • The Power Plant smokestack will be approximately 40 meters high. That is equivalent to a 14 storey building (assuming 9 foot floor heights)
  • The main power plant building is 20 meters, which is approximately 7 stories high
  • Both the stack and building will be visible from the intersection of West Mall and Queensway

Proximity to Ecologically Sensitive Areas

  • The area is next to the ecologically sensitive Etobicoke Creek ravine
  • The Etobicoke Valley is currently undergoing a clean up and beautification process (See Sherway Trail Update)
